What is this?

This is a traditional item used  -  and in some places still being used  -  in the Kikuyu tribe in Kenya. They mixed a special kind of fat with honey and smeared the mixture around food, especially meat. Then they put it inside the item which you see on the picture above.

The food would stay fresh for several months that way!
