A matter of seconds from a fatal accident!

Just an act of impulse prevented a fatal accident.

Those of you who have read all or some of our reports from Kenya, have also probably read about our Christmas celebration on Christmas Day. What you are about to read now, could have changed our Christmas celebration completely.

Here in Kenya, they use gas cookers in the kitchen to cook food. In the villages where they do not have proper kitchens, they use open fire with wood or coal. One example of the village solution, you can see on the picture below.

In our cottage, we have a proper kitchen and therefore we use gas cooker. Kenyans are used to that. Rune does not come close to use it, but Sharon and her family are very familiar with it.

On Christmas Day, we had guests. We were five adults and six children. All the food was ready except for the cabbage. Sharon's mother was stearing the cabbage on the right plate (see picture below) while Sharon was standing nearby washing some utensils.

Then, suddenly, flames were climbing up the wall behind the gas cooker. The tube that leads gas from the gas tank on the floor (see picture below) to the gas cooker was suddenly disconnected (see second picture below) from the gas cooker...!

Gas was coming out and it was burning! Children were playing in the corridor between the kitchen and the living room. The other adults were in the living room.

Sharon's mother was in shock as the flames were just 30 cm in front of her face, licking the wall almost up to the ceiling. Sharon, who was washing some utensils, was also in shock. She was standing to the right of her mother. The gas tank was to the left of her mother. It was a matter of seconds before the flames would would grab the end of the tube and make the gas tank explode.

Sharon had no idea how she managed it, but she managed to reach around her mother and turn off the gas tank. If not, ...........!!!

Later, in the evening, after having gone back home, Sharon's mother called. She was shaking. It was really sinking in how close we had been to a disaster.

Thank God that He helped Sharon to turn off the gas tank!

Investigation afterwards showed that the tube had not been connected properly to the gas cooker. Rosewood Cottage had not done their job. They had let us move in and use a gas cooker that was not safely connected and secured.

How did they react? We are not sure that you would like to know....!!! You can read about that later when we will rate our stay here at Rosewood Cottage.
